This is my first year really using this method. We covered the garden in old hay last fall. And the soil looks amazing. I’m interested to see if we have the bug problem. And it is hard to walk on, just because it’s so lumpy. But I am really hoping the weeds are more manageable. Thanks for the tips, and for sharing on the Homestead Blog Hop!

Thanks so much for this great post! I’m going to try it this year. I have a much smaller garden, so I’m hoping it will be a success! I’m wondering if DE powder could help with the bug problem?

    1. sufficientacres@gmail.com

Thanks for stopping by Angela! I’m glad you are giving deep mulch a try, I hope you have a most successful garden! I did use DE on a small ant infestation in the garden and it worked great, but the earwigs that were the worst problem were EVERYWHERE and spreading DE over the whole garden would have been extremely expensive. 🙁 But for small areas I think it would work great!

Hi Jess and Grace and family
Wonderful photos of your farm and critters. Can’t believe how much Jo has grown. Maybe this fall I could get down to visit some weekend. I am in Colorado with Stella now where i will take care of her critters while she and Jim are in Santa Fe, working on Stella’s house there. I am not used to the heat here but it is a lovely town they live in. A desert valley town like Eastern Washington. Hope all are well and busy. It sure looks like your are always very busy.
    Your site is wonderful.
Haven’t heard from John in months so hope all is OK. I will be in Colorado until June 22. Love and hugs Aunt Gin

I discovered this when a friend who uses an egg steamer didn’t understand why I had trouble with fresh eggs since she did not.

While I appreciate the ideas, I think there is also great value in allowing them to be BORED. It inspires independent thought, creative ideas and encourages them to explore new pursuits of their own choosing. There is plenty of science to support the superiority of boredom over planned events…and our household is happy to embrace it.

    1. sufficientacres@gmail.com

Yep, I agree! That’s why I said at the end of the post that there is nothing wrong with them being bored sometimes, it brings out there creativity and they need to be able to entertain themselves. That being said, some structure and things to look forward to are great also. There’s a “happy medium” to everything! Thanks for stopping by Mandy

Sometimes (not every time) my mayo comes out liquid and I can’t seem to get it firm up. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong.

    1. sufficientacres@gmail.com

      Hi Miranda,
I haven’t had this problem (yet) so I looked around on the internet and you are not alone. It looks like this is not an unusual problem and it’s totally random?! I did find a few tips that might help though. Adding a squirt of prepared mustard helps it to emulsify and using lemon juice and not vinegar works for some people. Use a jar to mix it and not a bowl and make sure the eggs are room temperature. If you would like to save a batch of mayo that is runny, here is a post about how to thicken homemade mayo.
      Hope this helps,
      Grace

      Hi Brenda,
I actually got my starter from a friend. I had tried to start my own but was not very successful. You can buy them on Amazon and they will come with instructions or maybe look at your local Farmers Market? There is a lady at ours that sells starter. If you would like to start your own this web sight has great step by step instructions! Good Luck! Grace

Thank you for the recipes and the lovely pictures of all the babies! Have you ever had any problems with coyotes? We live in Tennessee, and up until about seven years ago, we never had. Then we could hear the howling in early evening at dusk. All small wild creatures that we used to see are gone, except skunks, possums, and raccoons The local newspaper is full of ads for missing pets like small dogs and cats. The coyotes hunt an area until game gets sparse. Then they move on to another area. I had always thought they would stay west of the Mississippi, but somehow, they got across it!

    1. sufficientacres@gmail.com

      Hi Brenda!
Yes, we have always had problems with coyotes. They show up at least once a day, either one during the day or a group of them in the evening or during the night. Our big dogs do a good job of keeping them away and we always lock everyone(chickens, ducks, geese, goats) up tight in the evening. Our little dog is not allowed out of our fenced yard by himself. It sounds like your area has a big problem. They are smart, sly hunters and in packs they are even dangerous to our big dogs! I would rather have them though, than the cougars that come around sometimes!!

  108. Janine

    Dear Jess,Grace and family

Thank you for the wonderful photos. Was so sorry to hear you lost mommy goat. What happened?
Janine lost her kitty of many years last week. As it was her child she is very sad. He slept with her and was on her any time she sat down. I am loaning my old kitty Oliver to keep her company for awhile so she won’t be alone.
Hope my box arrived for Grace.
Will see if Ingrid and I can still pop in for a visit this fall. Love Gin

      Hi Gin!
Poor Janine, it’s no fun to loose a special pet!! Hope to see you soon!
      Grace
Yes I received the box! Thank you so much!

Love the pictures, sorry to hear you lost the nanny goat. What happened to her? We’ve been experiencing a long warm dry spell here. No corn crop for most of our farmers unless they could irrigate. Still, a couple of the larger farms have corn mazes set up for Halloween. It also looks like there won’t be enough grass to sustain cattle this fall and winter if we don’t get rain very soon. So much for NE TN! Thanks for the recipes. I really enjoy reading your blog.

Thank you Brenda, We’re not exactly sure what happened to our goat. She was sick in the morning, went down and died shortly after. We had called the vet and given her what she recommended. The vet was on her way when she died??
The weird weather sure has been hard on everyone’s crops this year!
Hope you get some rain soon,
      Grace
