Mix the first 6 dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Cut in the shortening until you have small crumbs. Add the egg and milk and stir well. Drop dough by the spoonful onto a baking sheet to make 12 biscuits. Bake at 450° for 10 to 12 minutes.
